Global Positioning System
Schlouch Incorporated has installed Trimble Sitevision Global Positioning Systems (GPS) on: one CAT D8T
and one CAT D8R that work with a fleet of CAT 627 scrapers and articulated dump trucks; two John Deere 850J,
one CAT D6R, one CAT D5M for fine grading and slope work; one John Deere 700J. In addition, there are seven
backpack GPS roving units available on site for instant grade and location survey to assist all earthwork
and utility activity and six GPS base stations. Schlouch has the capacity to operate seven GPS sites at
the same time.
With these systems, the operator has real time information right in the cab. This:
increases efficiencies
eliminates rework
improves quality of production
decreases project time frame
improves safety
Keystone Precision Instruments installed the GPS systems and provides training for Schlouch operators. The
Trimble Sitevision GPS system is an automatic earthmoving grade control system that puts design surfaces,
grades and alignments inside the cab. It is precise to 30 mm (0.1 ft) and enables the operator to perform bulk
earthwork in a stakeless environment using either automatic or manual blade controls.
A GPS receiver on the machine computes the exact position of the antennas on the equipment many times per
second. The cut/fill data is passed to the Sitevision GPS lightbars, which guide the operator. The cut/fill
data also drives the valves for automatic blade control. SI, using project engineer's CAD files, creates a
three dimensional computer generated model of the site. This data provides the 3-D look at the site.
